Sticky Campus Partner Organisation Kramer Electronics UK About VIA Wireless Collaboration Systems What do we want our collaboration-enabling technology to achieve? The ideal technology should: Remove the barrier between thinking and doing so that use of the technology does not distract from the learning process.   Enable full-participation from all the students so that they are fully engaged on the task in hand. Be affordable so that it can be used in many rooms across the campus.  If the technology is so expensive that it can only be used in a small number of learning spaces, then the benefits will be reduced considerably.  Not just because the use of what has been perceived as a valuable educational asset will be restricted, but because of the negative effect that this exclusiveness will transfer to the culture of the organisation.  Support all the requirements of collaboration: researching, exchanging ideas and expertise, co-creating information, enhancing social relations which are essential for (building) trust, and the motivation, enthusiasm and energy of the participants. Be accessible by everyone and simple to use – which will promote adoption; high levels of successful use throughout the organisation. Be secure.  All networks have an element of risk, but the solution needs to be robust at standards that are, at least, the minimum requirements for the financial sector or the military.   In a world that seems increasing happy to have its data stored on other people’s servers (the actual essence of so called ‘Cloud Computing’), ensuring that data is secure is a necessary ingredient of trust. Be easily understood and quickly learnt.  Especially for those not confident with technology, training needs to be delivered in bite-size chunks that increases capabilities in small baby-steps.  Too often an underinvestment in training results in just one or two sessions that are unreasonably expected to transform a novice into an expert – and which is therefore set up for failure. So, does ideal technology to address ALL of these points exist today? There are many technology systems on the market providing collaborative solutions for both business and education, but not many that meet the basic criteria for  success in different learning spaces across the whole campus.  You will read in the chapter regarding the Digital Classroom Roadshow, that at the start of the project in autumn 2015 we selected Kramer’s VIA as the most appropriate technology.    There is wireless collaboration technology out there that offers more technical capabilities – which can often be translated into English as more complexity.  Over many years of involvement in technology for all levels of education, but especially within the university sector, increased complexity equals reduced usage, except typically for a very small group of enthusiasts quickly who become ‘power users’ and who themselves get very frustrated when they cannot instil the same levels of enthusiasm and expertise amongst their ambivalent colleagues.   If we agree that wireless digital technology for active learning spaces that can be successfully adopted by the university needs to be… Intuitive – Removing the barrier between thinking and doing Engaging – Enabling the full-participation of all students Scalable – Affordable so that every learning space becomes an active learning space Truly Collaborative – Allows students to easily co-construct digital material Intuitive – Be accessible by everyone with any device and simple to use Secure – Offering military-grade data encryption without you even knowing it Then Kramer VIA really has become the Active Learning Benchmark.  About Kramer Electronics
